चन्द्र-बुध:— पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार चन्द्रमा ने अपने गुरू बृहस्पति की भार्या तारा का अपहरण किया। तारा और चन्द्रमा के सम्बन्ध से बुध उत्पन्न हुए। बालक बुध अत्यन्त सुन्दर और कांतिवान थे। अत: चन्द्रमा ने उन्हें अपना पुत्र घोषित किया और उनका जातकर्म संस्कार करना चाहा। तब बृहस्पति ने इसका प्रतिवाद किया। बृहस्पति बुध की कांति से प्रभावित थे और उन्हें अपना पुत्र मानने को तैयार थे। जब चन्द्रमा और बृहस्पति का विवाद बढ़ गया तब ब्रह्मा जी के पूछने पर तारा ने उसे चन्द्रमा का पुत्र होना स्वीकार किया। अत: चन्द्रमा ने बालक का नामकरण संस्कार किया और उसे बुध नाम दिया गया। चन्द्रमा का पुत्र माने जाने के कारण बुध को क्षत्रिय माना जाता है। यदि उन्हें बृहस्पति का पुत्र माना जाता तो उन्हें ब्राह्मण माना जाता। बुध का लालन-पालन चन्द्रमा ने अपनी प्रेयसी पत्नी रोहिणी को सौंपा। इसलिए बुध को "रौहिणेय" भी कहते हैं। 

बुध-चन्द्रमा के पुत्र थे और बृहस्पति ने उन्हें पुत्र स्वरूप स्वीकार किया था। अत: चन्द्रमा और बृहस्पति दोनों के गुण बुध में सम्मिलित हैं। चन्द्रमा गन्धर्वो के अधिपति हैं। अत: उनके पुत्र होने के कारण गन्धर्व विद्याओं के प्रणेता हैं। बृहस्पति के प्रभाव के कारण ये बुद्धि के कारक हैं। चन्द्रमा ने छल से तारा का अपहरण किया था, पिता के संस्कारों एवं स्वभाव का प्रभाव पुत्र पर भी निश्चित रूप से किसी न किसी प्रकार से प़डता ही है, अत: बुध का सम्बंध भी छल कपट से जो़डा गया है, मुख्य रूप से सप्तम स्थान स्थित बुध का। जन्मपत्रिका में अकेले बुध ही कई बार व्यक्ति को छल-कपट का आचरण करने पर विवश कर देते हैं।
