हमारे शास्त्रों में विविध कामनाओं की पूर्ति के लिए रुद्राभिषेक के पूजन के निमित्त अनेक द्रव्यों तथा पूजन सामग्री को बताया गया है। साधक रुद्राभिषेक पूजन विभिन्न विधि से तथा विविध मनोरथ को लेकर करते हैं। किसी खास मनोरथ की पूर्ति के लिये तदनुसार पूजन सामग्री तथा विधि से रुद्राभिषेक की जाती है।
रुद्राभिषेक के विभिन्न पूजन के लाभ इस प्रकार हैं-
• जल से अभिषेक करने पर वर्षा होती है।
• असाध्य रोगों को शांत करने के लिए कुशोदक से रुद्राभिषेक करें।
• भवन-वाहन के लिए दही से रुद्राभिषेक करें।
• लक्ष्मी प्राप्ति के लिये गन्ने के रस से रुद्राभिषेक करें।
• धन-वृद्धि के लिए शहद एवं घी से अभिषेक करें।
• तीर्थ के जल से अभिषेक करने पर मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है।
• इत्र मिले जल से अभिषेक करने से बीमारी नष्ट होती है ।
• पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए दुग्ध से और यदि संतान उत्पन्न होकर मृत पैदा हो तो गोदुग्ध से रुद्राभिषेक करें।

• पातकों को नष्ट करने की कामना होने पर भी शहद से रुद्राभिषेक करें।
• गो दुग्ध से तथा शुद्ध घी द्वारा अभिषेक करने से आरोग्यता प्राप्त होती है।
• पुत्र की कामनावाले व्यक्ति शक्कर मिश्रित जल से अभिषेक करें।
ऐसे तो अभिषेक साधारण रूप से जल से ही होता है। परन्तु विशेष अवसर पर या सोमवार, प्रदोष और शिवरात्रि आदि पर्व के दिनों मंत्र गोदुग्ध या अन्य दूध मिला कर अथवा केवल दूध से भी अभिषेक किया जाता है। विशेष पूजा में दूध, दही, घृत, शहद और चीनी से अलग-अलग अथवा सब को मिला कर पंचामृत से भी अभिषेक किया जाता है। तंत्रों में रोग निवारण हेतु अन्य विभिन्न वस्तुओं से भी अभिषेक करने का विधान है। इस प्रकार विविध द्रव्यों से शिवलिंग का विधिवत् अभिषेक करने पर अभीष्ट कामना की पूर्ति होती है।
इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि किसी भी पुराने नियमित रूप से पूजे जाने वाले शिवलिंग का अभिषेक बहुत ही उत्तम फल देता है। किन्तु यदि पारद के शिवलिंग का अभिषेक किया जाय तो बहुत ही शीघ्र चमत्कारिक शुभ परिणाम मिलता है।
रुद्राभिषेक का फल बहुत ही शीघ्र प्राप्त होता है। वेदों में विद्वानों ने इसकी भूरि भूरि प्रशंसा की गयी है। पुराणों में तो इससे सम्बंधित अनेक कथाओं का विवरण प्राप्त होता है।
वेदों और पुराणों में रुद्राभिषेक के बारे में तो बताया गया है कि रावण ने अपने दसों सिरों को काट कर उसके रक्त से शिवलिंग का अभिषेक किया था तथा सिरों को हवन की अग्नि को अर्पित कर दिया था। जिससे वो त्रिलोकजयी हो गया। भष्मासुर ने शिव लिंग का अभिषेक अपनी आंखों के आंसुओ से किया तो वह भी भगवान के वरदान का पात्र बन गया।
रुद्राभिषेक करने की तिथियां

कृष्णपक्ष की प्रतिपदा, चतुर्थी, पंचमी, अष्टमी, एकादशी, द्वादशी, अमावस्या, शुक्लपक्ष की द्वितीया, पंचमी, षष्ठी, नवमी, द्वादशी, त्रयोदशी तिथियों में अभिषेक करने से सुख-समृद्धि संतान प्राप्ति एवं ऐश्वर्य प्राप्त होता है।
कालसर्प योग, गृहकलेश, व्यापार में नुकसान, शिक्षा में रुकावट सभी कार्यो की बाधाओं को दूर करने के लिए रुद्राभिषेक आपके अभीष्ट सिद्धि के लिए फलदायक है।
किसी कामना से किए जाने वाले रुद्राभिषेक में शिव-वास का विचार करने पर अनुष्ठान अवश्य सफल होता है और मनोवांछित फल प्राप्त होता है। प्रत्येक मास के कृष्णपक्ष की प्रतिपदा, अष्टमी, अमावस्या तथा शुक्लपक्ष की द्वितीया व नवमी के दिन भगवान शिव माता गौरी के साथ होते हैं, इस तिथि में रुद्राभिषेक करने से सुख-समृद्धि उपलब्ध होती है।
कृष्णपक्ष की चतुर्थी, एकादशी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की पंचमी व द्वादशी तिथियों में भगवान शंकर कैलाश पर्वत पर होते हैं और उनकी अनुकंपा से परिवार में आनंद-मंगल होता है।
कृष्णपक्ष की पंचमी, द्वादशी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की षष्ठी व त्रयोदशी तिथियों में महादेव नंदी पर सवार होकर संपूर्ण विश्व में भ्रमण करते है। अत: इन तिथियों में रुद्राभिषेक करने पर अभीष्ट सिद्ध होता है।
कृष्णपक्ष की सप्तमी, चतुर्दशी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की प्रतिपदा, अष्टमी, पूर्णिमा में भगवान महाकाल श्मशान में समाधिस्थ रहते हैं। अतएव इन तिथियों में किसी कामना की पूर्ति के लिए किए जाने वाले रुद्राभिषेक में आवाहन करने पर उनकी साधना भंग होती है जिससे अभिषेककर्ता पर विपत्ति आ सकती है।

कृष्णपक्ष की द्वितीया, नवमी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की तृतीया व दशमी में महादेव देवताओं की सभा में उनकी समस्याएं सुनते हैं। इन तिथियों में सकाम अनुष्ठान करने पर संताप या दुख मिलता है।
कृष्णपक्ष की तृतीया, दशमी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की चतुर्थी व एकादशी में सदाशिव क्रीडारत रहते हैं। इन तिथियों में सकाम रुद्रार्चन संतान को कष्ट प्रदान करते है।
कृष्णपक्ष की षष्ठी, त्रयोदशी तथा शुक्लपक्ष की सप्तमी व चतुर्दशी में रुद्रदेव भोजन करते हैं। इन तिथियों में सांसारिक कामना से किया गया रुद्राभिषेक पीडा देते हैं।
ज्योर्तिलिंग-क्षेत्र एवं तीर्थस्थान में तथा शिवरात्रि-प्रदोष, श्रावण के सोमवार आदि पर्वो में शिव-वास का विचार किए बिना भी रुद्राभिषेक किया जा सकता है। वस्तुत: शिवलिंग का अभिषेक आशुतोष शिव को शीघ्र प्रसन्न करके साधक को उनका कृपापात्र बना देता है और उनकी सारी समस्याएं स्वत: समाप्त हो जाती हैं। अतः हम यह कह सकते हैं कि रुद्राभिषेक से मनुष्य के सारे पाप-ताप धुल जाते हैं। स्वयं श्रृष्टि कर्ता ब्रह्मा ने भी कहा है की जब हम अभिषेक करते है तो स्वयं महादेव साक्षात् उस अभिषेक को ग्रहण करते है। संसार में ऐसी कोई वस्तु, वैभव, सुख नही है जो हमें रुद्राभिषेक करने या करवाने से प्राप्त नहीं हो सकता है।
